PROJECT STATEMENT

The concept behind this tower centers around the interaction of relief patterns that overlap, conceal, and reveal its inner layers in the same manner as a Sarcophagus. The identity of the relief patterns pull reference to previous geometric studies of paintings from both Norman Ives and Alex Proba. By connecting these initial studies with the idea of layering, we were able to highlight the interaction between 2D and 3D patterns developed from a variety of origins, expressions, and intricacies. Semi-transparent fabric is used over certain portions of these reliefs to veil the layers underneath and introduce new possibilities for perceiving depth, depending on the viewer's perspective. This dynamic interaction between layers is further accentuated by instances of 3D relief that physically extend beyond their boundaries, blurring the lines that separate each layer. Structurally, the tower’s inner plywood core supports vertical wood panels adorned with 2D relief and organza fabric. The core is cladded with vibrantly colored foam that has been engraved by the CNC mill.
